東 南 西 北
Ten steps, four stages.
Seat & dealer
Draw the four wind tiles (or roll dice) to seat East, South, West, North.
East is the first dealer (oya) and starts the round.
Build the walls
Shuffle all 136 tiles face-down.
Each player stacks a wall: 2 tiles high, 17 long.
Push the four walls together into one square.
Break & deal
Dealer rolls dice, counts seats to pick the wall to break.
Roll again to count in from that wall's right end — that's the break point. Wall the dead wall from there (14 tiles).
Deal counterclockwise from the break: 4 tiles × 3 rounds, then 1 each. Dealer draws one extra — 14th tile.
Begin play
Flip the dora indicator — top tile of the 3rd stack from the live-wall end of the dead wall (see below).
Dealer discards first; play moves counterclockwise from there.
Dead wall — 7 stacks, 14 tiles
Stack 3 is the starting dora indicator, flipped before the deal. Each kan reveals the next stack over — 4, then 5, 6, 7 — up to four kan-dora. Stacks 1–2 are never flipped; they hold the replacement tiles (rinshanpai) drawn after a kan. The bottom tile of each revealed stack is its ura-dora, shown only if the winning hand riichi'd.
